I, Drott the Bear Killer. Have never been humiliated like this before! I will kill you.— Drott
Drott (ドロット Dorotto?) is a soldier serving as a personal guard of King Canute. He is notorious for his enormous physical strength and is well-respected among his comrades. When he meets Thorfinn, he refuses to let him see Canute and swings at him when Thorfinn insists that he knows the King and was once his personal bodyguard. Thorfinn evades all of Drott's attacks, leading the nearby men to make bets on how many hits Thorfinn could withstand. This eventually leads to Thorfinn betting he can take 100 hits from Drott; if he does, Drott is to let him pass to see Canute. Feeling insulted, Drott charges at Thorfinn in hopes of winning the bet and of restoring his honour after being humiliated.
Appearance[]
Drott is a large and imposing man with dark red hair. He wears chainmail armour with a blue top that reaches down to his knees, grey pants, a black undershirt over his armour, and a beady necklace. The right side of his face is gauged with three deep scars, likely received from a bear as Drott's nickname is "Bear-Killer". The scars are covered by an eyepatch, suggesting he likely lost his eye in the same incident.
Personality[]
Drott is extremely brutish and intimidating. He is very biased toward the people he views as weak, but has respect for the people who earn it. Drott could likely be seen as a bully, as he constantly insults Thorfinn for his status as a slave and his short stature. He appears to be a prideful man with a strong sense of dignity. Drott also has a strong sense of honour, as shown when he apologizes to Thorfinn and acknowledges him as a warrior upon losing to him, before agreeing to let him pass to see Canute as agreed.
History[]
Background[]
Drott earned the nickname "Bear-Killer". It is implied that the nickname is factual, given his large size, his notoriety, and the scars on his face resembling a bear's claws.
Slave Arc[]
Drott is first seen in the Jomsviking's encampment on Ketil's farm. He confronts Thorfinn after being told that he wishes to see Canute, laughing at him and insulting him by calling him a dwarf. Thorfinn's persistence annoys Drott, and he then gives Thorfinn one last warning by punching him across the face. Thorfinn evades Drott's powerful attacks and the crowd around Drott yells at him to finish Thorfinn off. Thorfinn notices that the men in the crowd are placing bets on how many punches Thorfinn could take before turning tail. Thorfinn tells the soldier to let him participate in the bet and bet on himself. As he has no wish for money, he asks that they let him meet with the king if he wins. The soldier tells him he likes his guts, but that he has to bet on something with low odds instead of something cheap like lasting under 10 hits. The soldier tells Thorfinn that he'll win if he can last 100 hits, but that his life will be forfeit if he loses. Thorfinn agrees. Angry that he's being mocked and looked down upon, Drott starts hitting Thorfinn. Drott punches Thorfinn 42 times before landing a solid hit on him when he is distracted, knocking him back. By sunset, Drott has punched Thorfinn another 68 times, reaching 100 punches. He seems exhausted by Thorfinn's incredible endurance. Drott kneels in front of Thorfinn and apologizes for doubting him, calling him a true warrior. Wulf approaches and Drott greets him, telling him that Thorfinn is certainly a former royal guard and that his request to see Canute should be granted.
