Summary[]
A hooded man brings Brodd and some other men and want them to tell Olmar that he won't be accepted in the king's guard. Brodd and the men can't hold their laughter as they know Olmar couldn't cut the pig. Brodd finds Olmar's face to look stupid and wishes to mock him and the hooded man is fine with that. As they head toward Olmar, the hooded man states their faces are just as stupid.
Brodd approaches Olmar and introduces himself, explaining that he have a message from Wulf. Olmar already knows he will be rejected, but Brodd tells him he still needs to deliver his message. Brodd then explains that about his request to join the king's guard, the captain spoke highly of him, however seeing his sword skills, he noted he still needs improvements. They regret to inform him... however in that moment Brodd and the other men can no longer hold their laugh. As they laugh loud, Brodd states there is nothing regrettable as he lost to a pig. Brodd continues to mock, wondering if the pig was wearing a chain mail or that there is an open position for a cook, but then recalls that he can't cut a pig. As they don't stop laughing, Olmar can't take it anymore and gets angry. He draws his sword and points it at Brodd, stating that warriors answer insults with their swords. The men however continue to laugh. Olmar then swings, but Brodd manages to dodge, warning him that even if he is weak, he can still hurt someone. Olmar gets angry and attacks them.
Thorgil is eating, but hear a commotion and people saying there is a five-on-one fight going on. Brodd tells the rest to leave Olmar to him as it will look bad if five people fight someone who can't cut a pig. Brodd then plays with Olmar, easily dodging his swings and beating him up without even using his sword. Thorgil comes and tells Olmar to stand up and kill Brodd. Olmar keeps crying, which annoys Thorgil, who then grabs him and lifts him, telling him to stand up. He tells him that there are two options for warriors that have been insulted: kill or die. If he can't kill Brodd, then he should die and Thorgil won't allow him to continue living without addressing Brodd's insult. Thorgil then keeps motivating Olmar to imagine how he is killing Brodd. Olmar then charges Brodd, who seeing the situation becoming more serious decides to stop joking around. However, in that moment, the hooded man shoots out a coin in Brodd's eye, which allows Olmar to stab him with ease and kill Brodd. Thorgil noticed something happened with Brodd. The other four men with Brodd decide to defend their honor and draw their swords. Thorgil congratulates his brother and tells him to leave things to him. Thorgil then easily kills the four men, slashing them to pieces, while Olmar is in shock that he killed a man.
Thorgil then looks at Brodd's body and sees that his eye is injured, guessing it was a stone or something like that. Ketil shows up and can't believe that they killed the king's men. Thorgil tells him its all fine. They insulted Olmar and he defended himself. As they were five, no one would object that Thorgil joined it. Ketil states that duels are forbidden by law, but Thorgil states no one cares about that law, and as they had swords, they should have known that insulting him would have a price. Thorgil tells Ketil that duels happen all the time and normally they won't be punished. The guards show up, wondering what happened, but seeing Olmar alive, they wonder what is going on. Additionally, they also see Ketil and another person, guessing he is a relative. Thorgil introduces himself and that he is a from the king's guard. He explains that it was a fair duel, and they did nothing wrong. The guard tells him to shut up as the king had forbidden duels, and they have disrespected him, so they are arrested.
While trying to arrest them, Thorgil cuts the guard's head. He then cuts the fingers of another guard, taking his sword and proceeds to kill four guards. The last guard pulls out his sword, but Thorgil cuts his hand. He tells the guard that he has a question, and he isn't a patience man, but if he answers him, he will leave him alive. Thorgil then asks why they allowed Olmar to win. The guard states he doesn't know, but Thorgil stabs him in the eye. Thorgil then asks him why they set up Olmar, and the guard explains it was to arrest Ketil, having him responsible for Olmar killing the king's men. Ketil wonders what he did to deserve this, but the guard explains he just followed orders from Wulf. Ketil feels this is the end as Canute set his eyes on them, but Thorgil grins and states it's the beginning, and the enemy is strong. Thorgil then proceeds to laugh.
Canute learns that Ketil's family escaped. Wulf apologizes, stating he send men to secure his ship, but the men haven't returned. Wulf states it was his fault that they failed to capture Thorgil. Canute feels that Thorgil sounds like a skilled warrior and Wulf confirms it. Canute tells him that they are proceeding with their plan as they have an excuse to punish them, and they will be heading to Ketil's farm. If Ketil isn't there, it would be fine, but if he is there and resists, they will overwhelm him. Wulf tells him that he will mobilize 32 of his guard and with 70 of Floki's Jomsvikings, they will have 102 men. As Floki will be arriving in three days, they will leave once he joins them.
When Canute is alone, Sweyn's head appears and Canute wonders why he is laughing. Sweyn states he is pleased that his son is starting to resemble him.
At sea, Leif tells Ketil's family it's fine to show up. Thorgil and the rest then come out of barrels. Thorgil thanks him for helping them, but Leif reminds them it's a deal as he won't smuggle criminals just for kindness. Thorgil tells him to not worry as they will keep their word and buy all of his cargo for triple the value and will have the slave, Thorfinn. Thorgil tells Ketil he can come out, but Ketil refuses, wanting to stay in the barrel.
Canute is fine with Sweyn mocks him or curse him, but he will do everything to create his utopia and for lost love.
