Markland (マルクランド Marukurando?) is an area in the northeastern portion of North America, discovered by Leif Ericson in 1000, giving it a name which means "land of trees".[1]

In 1022, while journeying to Vinland, Thorfinn split his settlers into two groups, leaving one made up of thirteen men in Markland with one of his five ships.[1] The colony later collapses mysteriously,[2] due to attacks by the indigenous people motivated by fear of an unknown illness brought by the Norse.[3]
