Appearance[]
Mr. Ugge has light hair, a small mustache and a prominent nose with visible pores. He wears a trapper hat and gloves. He nearly always looks distressed and sweaty.
Personality[]
Mr. Ugge is a paranoid man who is easily startled and scared. He catastrophizes, quick to assume the worst of those around him and believing that terrible things will happen. On the way to Vinland, he is certain that they'll never make it and that the boats will be swallowed whole by Jormungand; he is so loud in his distress that Thorfinn and the others hear him from the other ship. At Arnheid Village, he is terrified of the statue of "Arnheid". After learning about Markland, he becomes even more paranoid and distrustful. He is convinced that the Lnu are only pretending to be nice so that they can attack the Nords by surprise. Even when Kitpui states that he wants the Lnu and the Nords to learn from each other and prosper on the land, he belives that they must still be lying or that Bug-Eyes's translation must be bad.
History[]
Mr. Ugge leaves on Einar's ship on Thorfinn's crew's first expedition to Vinland. Hearing a commotion on Einar's ship, Thorfinn leads his own ship closer to see if everything is okay. Einar confirms, telling him that Mr. Ugge was simply startled. Mr. Ugge is yelling that they should turn back and that they will all get eaten by Jormungand; Einar reassures him that what he saw were whales, but Mr. Ugge is convinced that it was Jormungand and that it will swallow their boats whole. Einar points out that Leif made it to Vinland and back, but Mr. Ugge thinks it's because Leif "The Lucky" is the exception. When they finally see land (Helluland), Mr. Ugge sobs from happiness.
When Einar and Thorfinn erect their "Goddess" Arnheid stone statue on a rock and cover it with a roof to look over the village, the villagers are amazed by its likeness to a real person. Mr. Ugge is convinced that it was a real woman who was turned to stone by magic and thinks that the statue is terrifying.
Upon hearing that Markland was attacked, but by a different tribe than the Kitpui tribe, Mr. Ugge calls the villagers naive, convinced that the Lnu will attack them at every opportunity and claiming that it's their nature. One of the villagers tells him he may be overthinking; Mr. Ugge implies that they may have stolen the axe he lost, since they want iron tools. When Einar points out that they've been getting along well, Mr. Ugge tells him the Lnu are pretending to be friendly so that they can scout out Arnheid Village. He calls Thorfinn and Einar "too nice" and says that the Nords are invaders to the Lnu, and that their smiles must be hiding something. Clutching his hat, he says that the Nords have to get weapons, scout, and prepare for the worst to protect their land.
When Ivar and some of the other settlers start building fortifications, Mr. Ugge is quick to start calling the Lnu the "enemy" and is convinced that they would hide their true intentions until they attack. Styrk asks the settlers to stand behind the person they agree with: Thorfinn, who believes the village does not need swords, or Ivar, who thinks they do need swords. Mr. Ugge sides with Ivar. During the meeting with the Kitpui tribe, Kitpui says he wants the Lnu and Nords to get along and believes they can prosper on the land and help each other out. Mr. Ugge still believes they are lying to catch them off guard, and doubts Bug-Eyes's translation.
