Olmar (オルマル Orumaru?) is the son of Ketil, a young and arrogant fellow who longs to make a name for himself on the battlefield.
Appearance[]
Personality[]
Initially, Olmar's dream is to make a name for himself with his sword. However, he shows no skill with a blade, nor does he have any concrete plan to actually leave home.[4] He is easily swayed by his own insecurities and just as easily manipulated with the promise of becoming a real man.
History[]
When he goes drinking with Fox and Badger, he reveals his insecurities over being treated like a child and tries to challenge them to a fight, but is promptly humiliated and bursts into tears. Fox successfully baits him into trying to kill Einar and Thorfinn with the explanation that killing a man is a passage into adulthood. Despite agreeing to the attempt, Olmar is visibly nervous and when Einar fights back, he panics and retreats.[5] Fox teases him for being afraid of other people's deaths as well as his own.[6]
When Ketil takes Olmar along to Jelling to meet the new king, Olmar begs Canute to accept him as a thegn like his brother Thorgil, and tries to show off his skill with a sword. While he only succeeds in making a fool of himself, he attracts Canute's attention as a good way to trick Ketil's family into committing treason, giving Canute an excuse to seize Ketil's land and assets.
Canute's messenger, Brodd, successfully baits Olmar into attacking him, and while Olmar himself is unable to land a hit, another of Canute's soldiers blinds Brodd with a coin to his eye and Olmar's sword makes contact by sheer luck. Olmar is stunned and traumatized when he realizes he's actually killed a man for the first time, and the other messengers prepare to kill him. However, the fight attracted the attention of Olmar's brother Thorgil, and he kills the rest of Canute's men, having realized that the fight was a setup from the beginning.
Upon the family's return to Ketil's farm, Olmar watches the war unfolding between Canute's troops and the local farmers Ketil rallies, and realizes that war is not what he'd always imagined. He accepts that he's not cut out for war and when Ketil is injured, Olmar uses his authority as the farm's legal heir to surrender to Canute and accept exile rather than continue the fighting. However, when he and Snake arrive to deliver the surrender, Thorfinn is already in the process of negotiating with Canute's men. Olmar is moved by Thorfinn's resolve to avoid fighting, and later announces that he now wants to be a man like Thorfinn.
Thanks to Thorfinn, the farm is spared, and with Ketil unable to keep working, Olmar takes over the management of the farm. He pays reparations to the families of all the men lost or injured in the fighting, reducing his family's wealth and land by half. He is last seen hard at work in the fields.
