Thorgil (トールギル Tōrugiru?) is the older brother of Olmar and oldest son of Ketil. He has seen many battlefields and his ruthlessness frightens even his own father.

Appearance[]

Thorgil emanates the intimidating presence of a man who is accustomed to battle. Scars mark his entire body, including several on his face, the most notable of which is the scar running diagonally across his lips. He has long hair, a beard, and no eyebrows.

Personality[]

Much like Thorkell, Thorgil loves a good fight and has no qualms about killing anybody who gets in his way. He is ruthless and revels in violence, as shown when he suggests that the two child thieves caught by Snake lose an arm each to prevent further thievery. When Pater suggests that they be taken on as workers instead, Thorgil insists that they still be hit and is eager to deliver the hits himself. He does not hold back and beats Sture severely. Thorgil admires strength; he is shown to think highly of his father Ketil's presumed past as "Iron Fist Ketil", and similarly admires Sture for asking to take on his sister's punishment in addition to his own. Thorgil is shown to be blinded by his lust for fighting, as he doesn't understand his younger brother Olmar's wise decision to surrender to Canute. Thorgil is disgusted by Olmar's reasoning and Snake's agreement, and as he now sees them as cowards, he leaves the farm to parts unknown.

History[]

Background[]

Thorgil was born around 991 AD, the second child and first son of Ketil. It is implied that joined the army at a young age, as he is already a skilled warrior by the age of 24. He is extremely athletic and skilled at combat. Thorgil believed his father's lies about being Iron Fist Ketil, a famous and tough warrior, which may have inspired him to follow in his footsteps. At some point before he joined the army, Snake trained Thorgil in combat.

Slave Arc[]

Thorgil is first seen after returning with his father from a citizen's meeting. He meets his brother Olmar again after speaking to him and finds out that he is interested in enlisting. Thorgil says it would be good for him since experiencing the battlefield toughens people up. While Thorgil is at the farm, two child thieves are caught stealing bread. Once they are captured, Thorgil witnesses his father passing down a punishment that he believes is much too lenient and suggests that the thieves should each have an arm chopped off to ensure that they don't steal again. After Pater suggests that they be taken on as servants to pay off their debts instead, their punishment is reduced to a beating. Ketil reluctantly decides on ten hits each, but Sture asks to take on his sister's share despite her protests. Thorgil, pleased by Sture's resolve, asks Snake if he can deliver the punishment instead of him. Despite Snake's words of caution to reign in his strength and be careful, Thorgil hits Sture in the stomach so hard that Sture is immediately sent flying to the ground.

Sometime later, Ketil and his sons travel to the capital of Denmark to pay tribute to the late King Harald. While they stay in the capital, Olmar attempts to apply to the King's Guard after being encouraged by Thorgil. Olmar's task is to slice a pig for a feast, but he fails to cut through it. After he is mocked by other soldiers and bullied, Olmar challenges one of the soldiers to restore his honour, but they only laugh at him. After drawing a sword on Brodd, Olmar and the Brodd begin to duel. A cloaked assassin throws a coin into Brodd's eye while he is charging at Olmar, causing him to fall on Olmar's sword and die. Thorgil emerges and congratulates Olmar on his first kill, before proceeding to kill the rest of the soldiers. After the guards arrive, Thorgil tells them that the scene is the result of Olmar defending his owner, but a guard claims that duelling is illegal under the King's law. When Thorgil is told to hand over his sword and put his hands behind his back, he draws his sword instead and kills the guards. Thorgil and his family escape on Leif Ericson's boat after convincing him to take them there in exchange for Thorfinn.

Canute sets out to commandeer Ketil's Farm with the Jomsvikings and his King's Guard. After hearing of this, Ketil gathers his subjects to form an army and fight back. As the battle begins, Olmar and Thorgil make a plan to sneak behind Canute while the armies are fighting to ambush him. Olmar is skeptical of the plan, but Thorgil forces him to go through with it. Olmar turns back after nearly drowning, weighed down by his weapon. Meanwhile, Thorgil successfully swims to Canute, who has his back turned. He runs up to Canute and kills two of his bodyguards, attacks him, and deflects his attacks. As Thorgil is about to kill the king, Wulf tackles him and begins to strangle him. Thorgil eventually overpowers Wulf by gauging out his eye. Injured from the fight and with Canute's nearby men on their way to assist the King, Thorgil retreats to the water and heads back to the farm. With Ketil injured and a large number of men killed, the decision to fight or surrender is left up to Olmar. Thorgil tries to convince him to fight, but Olmar agrees to surrender, a decision Snake agrees with. This shocks Thorgil and their mother. Thorgil angrily walks off, muttering about them being cowards. After the battle, Thorgil leaves the farm and becomes a wanderer.
