Vinland (ヴィンランド Vinrando?), also known as Epekwitk (エペクウィトゥク Epekuuitouku?) by the Lnu,[1][2] is an area on the northeast coast of North America, south of Markland, and discovered by Leif Ericson in 1000, who named for its alleged abundance of grapevines.[3] Its native people are the Lnu[4] or Mi'kmaq, called skrælings by the Norse,[3] and who are ancestors of the Native Americans. In 1022, Thorfinn and his crew settled here in an attempt to create a peaceful land without war or slaves,[5] and built Arnheid Village[6] close to Gitpi's tribe.
Although the exact historical location is unknown, Vinland in Vinland Saga is specifically located along the modern-day Gulf of St. Lawrence, based on the map in Chapter 180, while the island Thorfinn and his group eventually settles is explicitly the modern-day Prince Edward Island,[7] and the bay they enter appears based on a small harbour near North Rustico.[8] This is confirmed in the afterword of Volume 26, where, in the translation notes, Makoto Yukimura states that "[The Mi'kmaq] traditional lands cover all of Epekwitk (also known as Prince Edward Island, where Thorfinn's settlement is located)".[9]
